Golf Grip - Pressure Test Having the right grip pressure throughout the stroke is necessary to allow the club to swing freely, swiftly and accurately. So often a player will hold the club so tight that it has no chance of swinging through with any consistency. Conversely holding the handle too loose will cause the club to swing out of control possible even allowing the hands to re-grip the handle throughout the stroke, and of course this is a absolute no-no in the golf swing. So, there is a “catch 22” when it comes to proper grip pressure. Perhaps Sam Sneed explained it best when he said, "Grip the club as if you were holding a baby bird. Not so tight that you squeeze the life out of it, but supple enough that bird does not fly away." Grip Pressure Test: Grip a golf club on a scale of 1 to 10, one being the lightest and ten being the hardest. Go through each number slightly gripping harder as you near ten. Next go back to pressure #3 or #4. Usually this is a pretty accurate grip pressure in which you can feel the club head and swing it in control without losing control. Remember, all you are trying to accomplish is a grip that will allow you swing the club head freely and in control. After all it is the club head that ultimately strikes the ball, this is what we should feel throughout the swing--the club head. If this is achieved everything else will follow.
