Club Buying Basics In the world of golf equipment and club fitting there are so many choices out there it is next to impossible to find the perfect set of clubs for your swing by merely reading the labels. Gone be the days of just picking up the neighbors set of blades to head for the links. You can try, but if you do you will be in for it. Your playing partner will likely smoke by you 30 to 40 yards off the tee on one of those unplayable 600 yard par 5's with his new titanium, graphite, low center of gravity jumbo driver. You need the technology edge too.
Technology has come a long way. Unfortunately so has the confusion as to how to find the right equipment. Firstly, there is so much to choose from where do you begin. This problem is unavoidable so I suggest you not delay and get started! Secondly, A major problem in the golf industry exists --There is no industry standard for golf club specifications. For example: Brand 'x' has established 36" as its standard length in its 5 iron. Brand 'Z' has established that the standard length in a 5 iron should be 37". Both companies implement different standardizations so it impossible to compare the two -- apples and oranges...
To better understand this reality assume you are going to a shoe store to hunt for new shoes. You walk into a new store you never been in before. As you begin to browse and try on different name brand shoes you realize that each company has come up with its own sizing chart! What a nightmare. Now, you can't just try on a size ten and pick a style -- No. You must try on several sizes from each company before finding the best fit. This is what is going on in the golf industry. My advise to you if you are trying to find the right set of clubs you will do it by trial and error. Don't just listen to that sales pitch at the counter, either rely on good qualified and educated professionals that will let you try the clubs prior to buying or just keep hunting. Another way to assure a proper fit is to go through one of those club fitting systems that many major manufacturers provide nowadays. The only drawback here is you are limited to the selection of clubs from that specific manufacturer. Remember, you can’t just take these new fitting specs to another company because their charts are completely different. Those are the choices. Don't get discouraged though, it is worth the effort. Keep in mind there is better equipment out there than ever before. It can really help.
Before you start you quest I have compiled a list of terms that can lessen the stress of this golf club hunting process. You're going to need some ammo to fire back as those unrelenting salespeople that use those pseudo golf terms. Just kidding! (Although those people are out there) Below is a list of common terms that determine what makes a golf club what it is and how it performs. Understanding these terms can greatly assist you in finding those magic sticks.
